A young man from Boca Raton lost his life over the Memorial Day weekend after his vehicle struck a trailer on a Florida highway. The 20-year-old bumped the trailer on the highway and was ejected from his vehicle, which violently flipped over and caught fire.
Little is known about the crash, as investigators look into possible causes of the wreck. They will test the young man’s blood for intoxication levels; they will reconstruct the accident to determine the vehicle’s speed and the points of collision that occurred during the crash; and they will make an ultimate conclusion on the car accident.
Given the charred frame and major damage absorbed by the 20-year-old’s vehicle, it would seem that speeding may be involved in this crash. There could be other negligent triggers for the crash though. For example, was the young man texting while driving? Since he struck a trailer from behind (and it appears it was the front right corner of his vehicle that hit first, which indicates he may have swerved to get out of the way), it would seem plausible that he was distracted.
In any case, this is a very tragic accident that serves as a major safety reminder for all Florida residents. First and foremost, always wear your seat belt. The young man in this crash was not wearing his, contributing to his ejection from the car. Also, always focus on the road in front of you. GPS devices, text messages, making a phone call — these things should be secondary to focusing on the road. Distracted driving is a negligent act, making such a driver liable for any accidents he or she is involved in.
